“Hold still,” Rei whispered. Ririko closed her eyes, smiling when Rei flicked the brush over her eyelids, leaving bronze glitter in its wake. Rei pretended not to notice the cameras and chose another brush. Ririko laughed at the ticklish touch of eyeliner. When she shook Rei’s hand jumped, the dark line of gel smearing into the creases at the outer corner of Ririko’s eyes.

“Ah! Sorry.”

“Cut!” the director shouted.

“Sorry, it was my fault for laughing,” Ririko said. “I ruined the take.”

“I feel a little silly,” Rei admitted as she turned towards the vanity table to check her own face in the mirror. The set was styled to look like a dressing room, with the premise of the commercial being that Venus Versus was getting ready to go onstage. Every surface gleamed sterile white as the black swarms of cameras orbited the girls. “Every time I put makeup on you I’m covering up an actual professional’s work.”

Kosaka joined them, tucking his smart back into his pocket and scrubbing a hand through his hair. “Doing okay, girls? The director says once we get this shot we’re done.”

“Can you ask them to turn the air conditioning off?” Rei asked. “It’s really cold here.” Their costumes did nothing to shield them from the blasts of cold air: fluffy white chiffon blouses cut off the shoulder, anchored by short voluminous skirts in signature Sunny Labo yellow.

Kosaka frowned down at her. Abruptly he shed his blazer and draped it over her narrow shoulders, and strode away to speak with the director. The silk lining still held the heat of his body, and Rei tugged it more tightly around herself.

“Okay,” Ririko said, clearly steeling herself. “I promise not to ruin this one. But it really does tickle.”

“Too bad we can’t go back to Avidance,” Rei joked. “I could just download the pattern and then choose your color on the slider.”

“Would the dance scenes have been easier in Avidance too?” Ririko teased. They’d spent the whole morning filming the dance shots. The director had wanted to get those out of the way while the girls were still fresh.

“Probably!” Rei stretched out her right leg and wiggled her ankle. The joint popped loudly. She’d stumbled on it earlier, but at least it didn’t look swollen. “Nothing a hot bath tonight won’t fix, though.”

Kosaka returned to them, whisking his jacket off Rei’s shoulders. Her arms, exposed, prickled with goosebumps. “They’ll turn off the air conditioning,” he reported. “And we’re changing up the shot. Since Ririko can’t hold still while you do her eyes, Rei, we won’t bother. We’ll use the footage of her doing your eyes, and you can just paint Ririko’s cheeks and lips.”

He signaled for Sunny Labo’s makeup artist to intervene. Rei watched Ririko’s small, pearly teeth digging into her bottom lip but, to her credit, she held perfectly still as they applied her eyeshadow and liner.

“Places!” the director shouted. Rei picked up the limited edition summer makeup palette and selected a fluffy brush from the tray on the table.
